Write Now! Catch a magic moment...
Write Now! Inspirational writing camp is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Michael V. Novak. It will be brought to fruition in the summer of 2014. The camp is for young Christian writers, ages 13-17, eager to begin or enhance their writing ability. It will be held in the scenic surroundings of Hawk Woods Nature Center located in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Each session of the camp will run for 4 days and 3 nights. The sessions will each follow the same format and include the same activities and writing exercises. Each participant will receive their own notebook, pen, and T-shirt when arriving at the camp. The notebook will be put to much use during the camp days. From the opening ceremony of the camp, the participants will begin writing and continue writing throughout their time at Hawk Woods. The camp is not meant to be educational, it is meant to be inspirational. Each segment of the writing camp will consist of opportunities to create unique forms of poetry and prose. Each participant will be involved in writing poetic verse as well as creating characters, settings, plots and object analysis to combine in short story format. In addition, the participants will be asked to reflect on their Christian faith and incorporate it into their writing.
Michael V. Novak has been a youth minister in the archdiocese of Detroit for over 30 years. He has created countless retreats as well as the musical, ministerial, high-energy presentation, "Jammin' With Jesus," which recently completed its 10th production. Michael is also the creator of the innovative YouthstocK gatherings of international youth; a compilation of music, ministry, retreat, and outdoor camping in a festival style setting for teens from Canada and the United States. He has worked as an emcee for 3 World Youth Days, introducing bishops and riling up crowds from all over the world while sharing his personal, spirit-filled testimony in a way only he can deliver. Michael has written and published 8 of his own books; a novel, a short-story compilation, 2 faith based books, and 4 collections of poetry. He is currently writing his 9th and 10th books. In addition, he has published 20 books for aspiring authors, ranging in age from 12 to 82. His experience in music, ministry and authorship is the perfect blend to lead a camp of this magnitude!
The camp will include travel to several local sites for character, object, and setting writing exercises. Along with these outings, the Hawk Woods grounds will serve as inspiration for other activities. The participants will not only write their own prose and poetry, they will work together to weave poems, stories and segments to use for their final products. The camp lunches and dinners will be provided by local catering outlets and all breakfasts will be continental style.
Hawk Woods is nestled in an industrial subdivision of Auburn Hills, very close to The Palace. It houses several cabins for sleeping quarters and a large lodge. The cabins were recently reconstructed to include 3 sets of bunk beds, electricity, and small tables in their interior. The cabins and lodge are located approximately 50 yards from the community restroom and shower facilities. The grounds contain acres of forest and miles of interwoven trails. Hawk Woods also includes a public park and a small Nature Center building, which houses several species of smaller animals. The property has a small pond within its boundaries, which is not accessible for wading, swimming or fishing, just for viewing and added inspiration. It is the perfect setting for a summer writing camp.
